Typing speed calculator

Turn characters typed and time taken into WPM and CPM, or convert between the two units. No sign-up, everything runs in your browser.

Calculator

Characters and time, in. Speed, out.

0.0

Typing speed (words per minute)

0.0

Keystroke speed (characters per minute)

One typing "word" equals 5 characters, so 60 WPM always means 300 CPM. Type 300 characters in one minute into the calculator above and watch both numbers land exactly there.

How to use the calculator

  1. Count or estimate the characters you typed, including spaces.
  2. Enter that number plus how long it took in minutes and seconds.
  3. Read your WPM and CPM instantly, then use the converter below to switch between the two units.

Tips for an honest score

  • Measure a full minute or more. Short 15-second bursts give inflated scores that you cannot sustain.
  • Type normally, not as fast as possible. A calculator score is only meaningful if it reflects how you actually type.
  • Compare WPM, not raw character counts. The 5-characters-per-word standard is what makes two scores comparable.
  • Retest weekly instead of daily. Typing speed moves slowly, and weekly check-ins show the real trend.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator divide characters by 5 to get WPM?

Typing tests define one 'word' as 5 characters. The average English word is about 5 letters long, so dividing your keystrokes by 5 turns them into a standard unit. This is what makes speeds comparable: your WPM on any test, app, or job listing means the same thing because everyone uses the same 5-character word.

What is the difference between WPM and CPM?

CPM counts every keystroke, including letters, spaces, and punctuation. WPM groups every 5 keystrokes into one word. They describe the same speed in two units, so 60 WPM is always exactly 300 CPM. Use WPM when comparing yourself with other typists and CPM when you care about raw keystroke output.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is average for an adult. Above 60 WPM is solid and comfortably fast for school or office work. Past 80 WPM you are fast by any measure, and 100+ WPM is professional typist territory. Consistency and accuracy matter more than a peak number, so aim for a speed you can hold without errors.

Do spaces and punctuation count as characters?

Yes. Every keystroke counts, including the spacebar, so a sentence with long words scores the same as one with short words if the character count matches. Real typing tests also subtract mistakes from your net WPM, while this calculator shows gross speed. Treat the result as a rough guide and measure accuracy separately.

How can I raise my WPM?

Practice in short daily sessions with correct finger placement, keep your eyes on the screen instead of the keyboard, and fix weak keys with targeted drills rather than retyping easy text. The typing test gives you a scored baseline, and regular practice on it is the fastest way to watch your WPM climb.
