How to use the Pomodoro timer

  1. Pick one task you want to finish, then press Start. Work on nothing else until the focus session ends.
  2. When the chime sounds, take the break the timer shows: 5 minutes after most sessions, 15 minutes after every fourth one.
  3. The dots under the timer track your cycle. After the long break, the cycle starts fresh and your total session count grows.

Tips for better focus sessions

  • Silence notifications before you press Start. One interruption costs far more than the minute it steals.
  • If a distracting thought pops up, jot it in the free notepad and get back to work. The thought is safe, and your focus stays intact.
  • Between study blocks, warm up your fingers with a one-minute typing test. It is a surprisingly good reset before the next sprint.
  • If 25 minutes feels too long at first, shorten the focus length to 15 minutes and build up over a week.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pomodoro technique?

The Pomodoro technique is a time management method: work with full focus for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After four focus sessions, take a longer 15-minute break. The rhythm keeps your brain fresh and makes long tasks feel doable.

Can I change the timer lengths?

Yes. Use the duration inputs below the timer to set any length from 1 to 120 minutes for focus sessions, short breaks, and long breaks. Some people prefer 50-minute focus blocks with 10-minute breaks, and this timer supports that too.

Does the timer keep my completed sessions?

Yes. Every finished focus session is counted and saved in your browser, so your total stays visible the next time you visit. No account is needed. Clearing your browser data resets the count.

Will the alarm still sound if I switch tabs?

Yes. The alarm plays when a phase finishes even if the tab is in the background. If your device is muted or the sound toggle in the header is off, the phase still changes silently.

What should I do during a Pomodoro break?

Stand up, stretch, drink water, or look away from the screen. Short, real breaks restore focus much better than scrolling your phone. A quick typing game from the games page is a fun active break if you want one.
